I've wanted to see this film noir by Robert Aldritch ever since college. I watched the restored DVD the other day (the ending is less ambiguous) and really loved it. Mike Hammer burns around LA slapping the shit out of everyone in solitary pursuit of the white-hot apocalyptic object in a mysterious 'Pandora's box' ("the great whatzit") which leads to nuclear catastrophe and annihilation during the explosive ending at a Malibu beach cottage.

The beginning of this movie is really disturbing. Shows you that there was some pretty hard stuff back in the '50s. I'd love to see the new DVD of this
