06.35 Down and Out in Paris And London by George Orwell
Down And Out In Paris And London (1933) by George Orwell
Pbk., Harvest/HBJ, 213 pp.
This famous novel by George Orwell was reviewed this year by a friend of mine. Based on his review and the comments therein I knew that this was a novel I had to pick up.
It really is an amazing book exploring poverty and class. The first half of the book describes his life of poverty in Paris. The descriptions of the life and characters are amazing, as he scrambles around trying to rustle up a few coins and enjoying life to its fullest. Orwell gets a job in a demonic kitchen and that part of the book is the most interesting.
The latter half of the book describes his life among the down and out in London. He hangs out with various hobos and ner do wells as they travel around amongst these strange homeless shelters.
This novel really is a classic and should be read by everyone.
