Stalin: Court of the Red Tsar by Simon Sebag Montefiore
Phoenix, Pbk., 720 p.

This is an extremely illuminating book about a man who, for better or for worse, impacted 20th century history in a massive way. Montefiore's focus in this history is to focus on revealing who the man Stalin was rather than an analysis of the historical events surrounding him.

Stalin's early years are covered quite quickly and it only once his ascendancy to power begins do we start to learn more deeply about how he lived, who the people were surrounding him and, to a certain extent, his motivations.

A fascinating a well researched account.
